Originally, computer was invented to manipulate numbers and to solve arithmetical problems. But during its development, computer was also recognized as a machine not only capable of manipulating numbers but also capable of processing data and information into knowledge. Our perception is enclosed to the idea that desktop computer, tablet pc, or notebooks are the only form of computer. But cellular phones and many other electronic devices are also considered computer. It is possible through the use of Information Technology.
The McGraw-Hill Science and Technology Encyclopedia define Information Technology (IT) as “the field of engineering involving computer-based hardware and software systems, and communication systems, to enable the acquisition, representation, storage, transmission, and use of information”. So it helps us in a variety of ways, just like in communicating to people throughout the world, problem-solving, do research through the internet, giving us entertainment for us to cope with stress. Information Technology is also a big help to the fields of banking, communication, public health, and also for business. Information technology allows these fields to attain their goals and objectives.
· Information Technology and Banking - with the aid of Information Technology made it easier for us to do some banking. Banks using computers with special programs speeds up the transactions. Nowadays, we can withdraw or deposit money through the internet regardless of where you are. Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is also one of the outgrowths of information technology in banking. It allows us to withdraw money without going in the banks.
· Information Technology and Communication - In the past, the very common means of communicating is to send mails. But it will take some time. Information Technology improves this means of communication in the form of text messages or e-mail. Telecommunication companies allow us to send messages in our cellular phones and it will only take seconds or minutes to be received by our recipients. Also we can send mail through internet. Not only we can send messages in our cellular phone but we can also transact money with the collaboration of other institutions.
· Information Technology and Public Health - Information Technology, its application to the field of public health is a very big help to the people. Equipments in the hospitals are examples of application of information technology to the field of public health. Doctors or public health workers can easily identify and create an effective ways or procedures to do their task using information technology. It provides accuracy and prevent error occurrence. It also allows some public health organization to publish important information about diseases and threats to the internet to be access by general public.
· Information Technology and Business - The application of information technology in business is one of the most important innovations that humans have made. Business using the applications of information technology enables their transaction to be much easier and efficient. For example, in big businesses like malls, their cashiers don’t have to manually check the price of the item purchased but instead computer will provide them the information they need. Business also uses the internet to promote their products to the public by creating web pages or web sites.
Truly, Information Technology (IT) is improving our way of life. Just like a bundle of things that we can compare to it, making our work efficient. Like the water piping system or the electrical lining system; it is connected to every house and controlled by a main system just like how Information Technology provides us connection to every people anywhere in the world, social networking sites like facebook, blog, and twitter, and the sharing of information across computer network between file server and clients or the client/server, providing businesses and schools a connections to their branches in order for them to monitor it. Like the library, it contains countless information like history, science and other related subjects, religion, people, literature, and many more that we people can acquire as knowledge. We can search whatever we want through the internet and the World Wide Web. Like the printing press, it provides outputs on our research works through the use of a printer. Like what telephones do, provide constant communication to people especially their love ones. Like the bicycle, or airplane that provides us transportation not literally but figuratively because we can see or view images of a particular place that gives us idea of what that place looks like and provide us some information about it including their history and tradition. Like the roads and highways, connecting one place to another, providing better routes for a better life of people.
Choosing your career in life is not as easy as choosing what you will wear or choosing what food you want to eat. Choosing your career is definitely choosing what kind of life you want. It’s essential that you consider the factors before choosing your career. For example, is it the career that I want? Because many of us choose a career for the reason that many is taking or choosing it. Second is, do I have the skills for this career? Third, how sure am I that my career can cope with the fast changing environment?
A career in Information Technology is definitely a good one because this career is not a dead-end job. It can cope to the fast changing environment. My teacher in high school ones told me that it is best to choose a career in the world of technology. As long as technology is there and it is impossible that it will be wipe out, you’re sure that you will have a good career or job. You can acquire a career in information technology at any age and any skill level.
Careers in IT are also a continuous learning because you have to adopt with the changes in technology. Since technology is innovating, you’ll have to continuously learn a lot of new things in this field. It is good, because your learning will grow and careers in IT have many advantages like you can work anywhere in the world, work in almost any industry, participate in a constantly changing environment, and many more.
